Alfabet hiszpański składa się z dwudziestu ośmiu liter: : a, b, c, ch, d, e, f, g, h, i,j, k, l, 11, m, n, fi, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, x, y oraz z. Istnieją również dyftongi będące kombinacją mocnych samogłosek (a, e, o) ze słabymi (i, u). Mają one charakterystyczne brzmienia, jak na przykład ue w bueno (dobry) oraz io w dios (bóg).
Wymowa w znacznej mierze odpowiada pisowni. Nie wymawia się jedynie litery “h” oraz czasami “u”. Spółgłoski “b” oraz “w” brzmią prawie identycznie, podobnie jak ,,11″ oraz “y”. Litera “fi” – n ze znaczkiem nazywanym tyldą – wymawiana jest przez nos, podobnie, jak polskie “ń”, na przykład w wyrazie maiiana (rano lub jutro).
